"Winky Solves A Mystery"

A Little History
Column by Max Elliot Anderson
As you saw earlier, I grew up as a reluctant reader. But when I was younger, my father also wrote children's books. "Winky Solves a Mystery," was published in 1948 when I was only 2 years old, and "Winky and the Ghost Lion" was published in 1950.
With a heritage like that, I should have known that I'd begin writing for children one day too. If you're dreaming of becoming a writer, my story should encourage you because if it can happen for me, it can happen for you.
Someone told me early in my writing journey that if you truly believe you can write and have the desire to do it, you're right. And if you don't fully believe you can do it, you're right. Each of us is unique with a fresh voice like none other. Look around you, write about your experiences. Write what you know and what you love. The path isn't an easy one, but then, if it were, the whole world would be writing books, right? Don't think of yourself as unpublished, think instead that you are only pre-published, and keep on working to be the very best you can possibly be.

Guideposts
I had a true story published in the May – June 2005 issue of the Guideposts' sister publication, Angels on Earth. The title is, "His Eye is on the Sparrow." This is a harrowing, true life account of the time when my father and I were working on a documentary film, "Living Legends." The project was about life in the Native American homes of Indian Christians. We became lost in the Arizona wilderness in freezing temperatures. Our car was disabled and we had to spend the night. The next day we hiked out and found help. I hope you'll have a chance to read this story.

"The book is a wonderful mixture of Indian lore, truth, God's love and redemption, and adventure. No one can walk away from Legend of the White Wolf without being satisfied in their heart, soul, and mind. School Visits
I'm available for a limited number of school visits in and around the Rockford, Illinois area. My program is unique and the responses have been very positive. I prefer reading nights where students and their parents attend together, and where copies of my books can be sold, but I'm also available for other programs.
